We are visiting Perth for the first time in May and looking to fill up the itinerary with some more things. We have already made plans to rent a car and drive down to Margaret River for 3 days or so, and maybe do a day tour to the Swan valley as we both like wines (wife and i, perhaps this one - https://www.experienceoz.com.au/perth/tours/small-group-swan-valley-sightseeing-tours-and-cruises), but other than that are not sure how to invest our time.
We can't travel too far so it has to be in driving distance of Perth ideally although we can obviously stay overnight or a couple of nights if there is plenty to do around some part... basically just want to ensure we see as "amazing" highlights as we can within our time frame
assuming we have 1 week spare to fill up what would people recommend in Western Australia outside perth?
Hi @Phoenix77 and welcome to the Community!
Regardless of where you choose we're sure you'll enjoy Western Australia - it's an excellent place that would take endless weeks to explore in full.
Itinerary-wise, given the distance of a lot of places in WA from Perth it depends what kind of environment you'd like to explore really. Would you rather do a couple of day trips for some diversity or are you willing to commit to one spot that really interests you and run the risk of feeling like you didn't see enough?
For starters, I'd suggest having a look over our Western Australia Bucket List here: https://news.experienceoz.com.au/western-australia-bucketlist/ as it's pretty extensive and covers a wide variety of experiences. Find those which pique your interest and let us know and we can tell you how possible it all is :)
A few possible suggestions:
- Take a trip over to Rottnest Island on the ferry (can be a little pricey but is beautiful and worth the investment)
- you could drive up to Cervantes (only a couple of hours) and see the Pinnacles, pretty unique to WA... tours are also available e.g: https://www.experienceoz.com.au/perth/tours/pinnacles-desert-tours-from-perth /shameless plug
- Wave Rock is a few hours away, it's interesting and worth a visit but there isn't much else there than the rock itself. Can take the Tin Horse Highway route to see all the sculptures along the way!
Do you know what you're looking to actually do IN Perth while you're there? Provide us with a little more specific info and hopefully we can be a bit more helpful :D
Thanks for the information!
Yes we will be doing Rottnest but only as a day trip, so that is already included into the itinerary time.
Wave rock doesn't really interest us, but the Pinnacles look intriguing.
we are interested just in general "beautiful things" that we won't be able to see anywhere else, as we have travelled in all states but WA and the NT (soon!). So about the only factor would be that we are not adrenaline junkies but other than that good to go.
We really like the look of the beaches and national parks around Esperance, do you think this would be a good visit? We could continue on to there from Margaret River (drive straight through) and then make some stops on the way back do you think?
thank you :)
